And where are we artists now?
/

In search of a performative language for the unspeakable

Documentary film premiere The more it comes the more it goes followed by a panel discussion & documentary film screening Don't touch my holocaust

The Israeli director David Maayan is considered a pioneer of experimental and interactive theatre. He has translated and directed numerous plays in Israel and many other countries and created performances for theatres and festivals – including the Wiener Festwochen, the Berliner Festwochen, the Theaterspektakel Zürich, the Schauspielhaus Wien, Linz 09 and many others. In his artistic work he deals intensively with the subject of the Holocaust, searching for new artistic ways of addressing the unspeakable and offering alternative, tangible perspectives for the audience. He founded the Akko Theatre Center in northern Israel and ran it for many years. He was also artistic director of the Jerusalem Street Festival and the Akko Festival.

Central themes in his work include the role of remembering and thinking about the Holocaust; the analysis of how remembrance differs between generations; and how families talk about it today, 80 years later.

The Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom, which has a long-standing collaboration with David Maayan, is showing two film documentaries about his work as a director.

The first evening, May 21, shows Don't Touch My Holocaust, by Asher Tlalim from 1994, which deals with the performance Arbeit Macht Frei in Toidtland Europe. The performance was staged at the Acco Theatre Center, in Berlin, Hamburg, Recklinghausen, Zurich and at the Wiener Festwochen. The film follows actors and audiences in different venues from Morocco to Germany and explores the impact of the Holocaust on the children and grandchildren of victims and perpetrators in different cultures and their different decisions to remember or forget.

The recently released film The more it comes the more it goes, which premieres on the second evening on May 22, follows the creation of the performance of the same name. The performance was developped for Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom by David Maayan in 2022, based on texts and conversations with performers, students, artists and authors, including Joshua Sobol and Magda Woitzuck. The film premiere will be followed by a panel discussion with the artists involved in the project.

Together, these two films span over 30 years of a unique artistic approach to the impact of the Holocaust on Israeli and Austrian society and the way in which younger generations continue to engage with this history.
